Born in Milan in 1935, Mario Bellini is an internationally acclaimed Italian architect and designer known for his innovative approach to design. With a career spanning over five decades, Bellini has contributed immensely to both the fields of architecture and design, but it's his work in furniture design that truly made him a household name in the mid-20th century.
Bellini graduated from the Politecnico di Milano in 1959 with a degree in architecture. From the onset of his career, Bellini showcased a particular flair for blending aesthetics with utility. His designs, often characterized by their boldness and tactile allure, invited users to not just view but to engage, transforming mundane daily interactions into sensory experiences.
Bellini's work in furniture design is characterized by its transformative nature. He had the uncanny ability to take everyday objects and elevate them to the realm of art without sacrificing functionality. The "Cab" chair, birthed from his collaboration with Cassina, stands as a testament to this, reinventing the traditional chair with its innovative skin-over-frame design. The 1970s saw the introduction of the "Camaleonda" sofa, a piece that effortlessly blended modularity with Italian luxury, cementing his reputation as a visionary in furniture design.
But arguably one of the most iconic chapters of Bellini's design narrative is his collaboration with B&B Italia, culminating in the revolutionary 'Bambole' series. Also launched in the 1970s, the Bambole collection was a radical departure from traditional seating, replacing rigid structures with a fluid and organic form. These pieces, evoked a sense of plush comfort akin to soft toys, becaming emblematic of Bellini’s approach - always challenging, always innovating.
His work, while continually evolving, retained a consistent essence of inventiveness, leading to multiple Compasso d'Oro awards and making him a revered figure in design institutions worldwide.
